Napkin Drawings

The years of 2020 through 2022 were tough. Not only were we coping with a pandemic worldwide but I was learning to live with grief after losing several family members. One of the ways I dealt with this was to create drawings of happy moments in my life. As a photographer I tend to become mostly invisible when I’m around people. I’m a quiet, observant person and my favorite photos are of people —not looking at the camera — but interacting with each other in a special way. I drew sketches inspired by these intimate images and then made thread drawings onto upcycled table linens. Why did I use old dinner napkins for my canvas? What better use for a piece of cloth that has seen many family feasts and celebrations? These bits of fabric have witnessed so much and embroidering them with happy memories seemed appropriate to me.
